Frequently Asked Questions
Have a Question? We've Got the Answer!
What type of guitar is best for beginners?
For electric guitar, Strat-style guitars are very popular among beginners. For acoustic, the two most common types are Nylon & Steel String, where nylon usually has a bigger neck and softer strings, compared to a Steel String which has a slimmer neck, brighter tone, and tougher strings. In the Steel String range, the most common types are Dreadnought and Grand Auditorium shapes.
What is the difference between acoustic, electric and bass guitars?
Acoustic guitars rely on acoustic resonance to generate sound through the body of the guitar. Electric guitars typically rely on an amplifier connection via a guitar cable to generate sound through the pickups. A Bass guitar does the same thing as an electric guitar, but usually has less strings (4 or 5, sometimes more) and uses a thicker, longer string, usually an octave lower than guitar strings.
How do I choose the right guitar size?
Young children will often start out on a Β½ size or ΒΎ size acoustic guitar, but can also start out on a 4/4 full sized guitar. This is the same for electric guitar and bass, but less common are Β½ size electric guitars and basses. Adults will usually start on a full size guitar.
What accessories do I need to start playing guitar?
If playing an acoustic guitar, all you need is your acoustic guitar! If playing an electric, you will likely need an amplifier or a means of plugging in your guitar to generate sound.
Are guitars difficult to learn?
The guitar is considered a moderately difficult instrument to learn, however pales in comparison to that of the Accordion or Bagpipes.
How often should guitar strings be replaced?
Guitar strings should be replaced every 1-3 months, depending on how often the strings are used. Professional musicians will often change strings between gigs.
What brands of guitars are popular with beginners?
Our popular brands for acoustic guitar beginners are Tanglewood, Stagg & Alvarez. For Electric Guitars & Basses, our most popular brands for beginners are Levinson, Stagg, Newen & Ashdown.
