Weighted keys are exactly what the name implies, keys that are weighted to replicate the feeling and mechanics of an acoustic piano when a key is pressed. This creates a softer tone when lightly pressed or a brighter, louder tone with a harder press.To make a good start in developing their piano technique, the learner needs to feel that they are pushing against they key to play a note, and also experience the sensation of the key pushing back up when returning to its resting position.

Another assembly format for digital pianos is the Hammer action. The mechanism makes it so that when you press down on your key, a hammer strikes a surface – making it feel like an acoustic piano. Semi-weighted keys merge the synth-action or springs of unweighted keys with light weights used in weighted keys. And therefore, you get a taste of both worlds including mild to moderate resistance and a recoiled effect with a faster recoil–although not as fast as a synth-action.
